Risk Management Rounds
Pathology

Overview

Most malpractice prevention courses are geared toward clinicians whose major liability risks ultimately arise from communication lapses during face-to-face patient encounters.  While this focus is certainly appropriate for primary care physicians, it doesn’t address the needs of pathologists and other consulting specialists who rarely even meet their patients.  This course focuses on patient safety issues for pathologists.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:

1. Identify the major medical misadventures and associated issues that most commonly underlie medical malpractice suits against pathologists.
2. Discuss how better communication with the referring doctor can reduce medical errors, improve patient care, and reduce lawsuits.
3. Understand how the courts define a physician’s duty in a variety of situations common to the practice of pathology.
4. Discuss how to avoid communication errors with referring doctors.
5. Understand how medical record documentation and maintenance affects patient care and medical liability.
6. Discuss the legal duties and risks of testifying as an expert witness.

Target Audience
This course is designed for pathologists who want a solid overview of risk management techniques and patient safety issues unique to the practice of pathology.
