Risk Management Rounds
Obstetrics and Gynecology

Overview

The purpose of this course is to teach physicians how to recognize and avoid the kinds of lapses that give rise to avoidable malpractice suits, and then document their actions accordingly.  As a result, patients will be safer, happier, and less likely to encounter the kind of unpleasant surprise that usually prompts a malpractice suit.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:

1. Discuss how communication with patients can help improve patient care and prevent lawsuits.
2. Apply principles of informed consent, implied consent and informed refusal in a variety of clinical situations.
3. Document patient care in a manner that reduces the risk of medical errors.
4. Explain how the doctor-patient relationship is formed and terminated in special circumstances, including contractual relationships, supervisory relationships, emergencies, coverage and on-call situations, and informal consultations.
5. Recognize the OBG’s duty to third parties such as spouses and sexual partners.
6. Recognize risks associated with specific procedures such as sterilization, and conditions including genetic and congenital issues, prescribing for pregnant patients, birth videos, breast cancer and ectopic pregnancy.

Target Audience

This course is designed for OBGs and others who treat female patients for gynecological care.
