Need

The need for the program was determined from comments from previous course participants and from malpractice insurers' statistics.

 

Objectives
When they complete this course, participants should be able to:
  • 1. Name the four elements of malpractice.
  • 2. Know how referrals affect liability in psychiatry.
  • 3. Take steps to reduce medication errors.
  • 4. Discuss a psychiatrist's duty to warn others about dangers presented by psychiatric patients.
  • 5. Recognize risks associated with restraints, commitment and other medical-legal issues.
Methodology
Risk Management Rounds: Psychiatry is a self-study course, with CME test.
Target Audience
Risk Management Rounds: Psychiatry is appropriate for psychiatrists who are interested in ways to reduce the potential for malpractice liability.
