Risk Management Focus: The Complete Series

Need
The Risk Management Focus series has been designed for physicians who want concise, relevant information regarding risk management topics.  This version includes all of the series components with special emphasis on patient safety and medical error prevention.

Objectives

When they complete this course, participants should be able to:

1. Identify and address issues related to communication with patients, to improve patient compliance and reduce medical errors.

2. Identify and address issues related to communication with colleagues, to reduce the risk of errors such as wrong-site surgery and  miscommunication that can lead to delayed diagnoses.
3. Identify and address issues related to the medical office environment.
4. Identify and address issues associated with professional ethics, including protecting patients’ interests in a managed care environment.
5. Document patient care in a manner that reduces the likelihood that medical errors, including misdiagnoses, will occur.
6. Discuss five most common sources of medical error and missed diagnoses, and ways to prevent them.
7. Know how to investigate adverse outcomes to determine the root cause, and take appropriate action to prevent recurrence.
